My 21 year old daughters dream is to become a pilot. She was almost done with fist step which is to obtain her a Private Pilots license when she ran into trouble. She went to have her FAA Medical Exam completed back in August of 2009, she was referred meaning that she did not get the clearance and the matter was sent on t0 the medical people at the FAA for more review. She was put on ADD meds back in middle school because her grades went down. After the meds didn't work she stopped taking them. I felt like she was just having a hard time adjusting from elementary school to middle school. She was put on antidepressants to deal with some situational depression she was experiences, she was never diagnosed as having clinical depression. When she filled out the paperwork at the doctors office for her FAA medical is asked for a medical history and she listed the antidepressant that she had taken but had been off of for at lease one or more months and that was the reason why she was deferred. Well now since August we have been dealing with the FAA trying to get this matter resolved. We were told that she had to be off the medication for 90 days and have the Doctor who prescribed it send a letter saying she no longer needed the medication and had no problems from not taking it. The next thing the FAA wanted was a copy of her medical records after the FAA reviewed those the sent a letter of denial with further instructions on how to fight the denial. More hoops to jump through. This has to be the most frustrating thing our family has gone through thus far. It's been difficult to watch my child not be able to pursue her dreams. We have heard it could take 4-6 months to get this next step done and then we still don't know if it will be over. The Federal Aviation rules and regulations basically stated that you can have a mental disorder as long as it doesn't manifest itself in an overt manner, which i took to mean don't attempt suicide or have pshycotic behavior which my daughter never has. Knowing now after all we've been trough I would have just told her n0t to list the antidepressant on the form
